Tennis Tournament

The event is the brainchild of long time Casa de Campo villa owner Rick McDaniel, Chairman of the Fundación Familia McDaniel. In just 6 years he has seen the event grow from eight donors and RD$100,000 to last year’s record 87 sponsors and RD$1.2 million. All funds raised by the Fundación are distributed back to the ball boys and tennis players in the form of the prize money, scholarships and English lessons. In addition, shirts and baseball hats are given to all the players and ball boys. The other two events related to the tournament are a thank-you luncheon for sponsors hosted by McDaniel at his villa and the awards ceremony and dinner at La Romana Country Club. The board members are Pablo Green, Stan Couldrey, Harry Moscatello, Tom Wahl, Emilio Vásquez, Adonis Berroa, Helen Wynne, Magdalena Garcia, Lou Gilmore and Rick McDaniel.

The Fundación Familia McDaniel was established to support the wellbeing of the ball boys of Casa de Campo. The Fundación seeks to empower the ball boys and players by giving them the tools for a better education in order to succeed in the future. This is achieved by granting four new full scholarships annually that remain in place until the children graduate from high school, always requiring that they maintain a certain grade average and exemplary behavior on the courts. Currently there are 21 ball boys in the program that covers their tuition, books, supplies and uniforms at a private school. The Fundación also offers four weekly English classes for each shift to ball boys and players of both clubs. Those that excel and show enthusiasm are invited to an informal conversation session at the home of their instructor Pablo Green. During last year’s awards ceremony part of the event included a skit in English performed flawlessly by the ball boys, a testament to the classes being sponsored by the Fundación.

As in years past, La Romana Country Club will serve as the host for the final match and the awards dinner for sponsors and player with their families. New for this year will be a doubles exhibition pro set match by the top two tennis players from each club, selected by Adonis Berroa and Emilio Vazquez, tennis director of the Country Club and La Terraza respectively. The matchup will bring the LRCC team represented by CdC No. 2 and 3 players Francisco Concepción and Edwin Guerrero, while La Terraza will bring No. 1 Pedro Nolasco and No. 4 José Santana. The match will take place at La Terraza on Wednesday, March 14th at 5:00pm. Contributions are tax deductible and can be made payable to the Fundación Familia McDaniel and delivered to Rick McDaniel at El Batey 12, Tom Wahl at the Country Club or Emilio Vásquez at La Terraza Tennis Center.
